Director’s Statement
Don’t Tell Mother is a semi-autobiographical film about my experiences growing up in a middle-class family in Bangalore. The story is based on two significant and traumatic events from my childhood. One of the incidents was when I was hit uncontrollably by my Math teacher with a cane.
This was my consequence for talking too much in the class. The second incident involved my younger brother getting rushed to the hospital because of me, his survival left uncertain.
Using this film, I want to delicately explore and expose how children in India are subjected to violence on a daily basis and how it affects them.
As this is based on some very personal and intimate memories from my childhood, it makes me uniquely qualified to tell this story. It is important for this story to be told as violence towards children is still widely prevalent in India.
